If you launch it in the proper runlevel, the interfaces ARE going to  
be up.
That's what runlevels are made for..

If you're referring to the fact that the interface still didn't get an  
address via DHCP, that's another story, but i doubt it's a problem.  
Sometimes i start rtorrent and realize after 10 minutes that the  
ethernet cable was not connected, but that never caused any crash.

Launching via init and launching via cron are two very different things.
Interactivity of the launched processes being one of the differences.

Anyway if your spider sixth sense tells you this has nothing to do  
with it, you may be right.
Excluding problem a priori without consideration is generally not a  
good way of resolving them thou.

I do start rtorrent with my user so that's fine.
