[Libtorrent-devel] Is it possible to edit a custom method that returns a string?

If I create a custom method that returns a string like this:

system.method.insert = custom1, string, "testing1"

$custom1= returns "testing1"

Is it possible to change the value to something else later?
system.method.set = custom1, "testing2" says "Command not modifiable or
wrong type."

Is there another way to do this?
